Coz’s Backyard Ultra

One Loop. Every Hour. Last Runner Standing. 30 Hour Limit.

Welcome to the ultimate test of grit, strategy, and stubborn joy. The Backyard Ultra format is simple — and that’s what makes it brutal. Runners complete a loop every hour on the hour. Miss the cutoff, and you’re out. Keep going until only one runner remains.

This isn’t just a race. It’s a battle of willpower, community, and the quiet voice inside that says one more loop.

The Details

  • The Date: May 30, 2026 @ 8 a.m.
  • The Loop: 3 1/3 mile trail course, with 200′ of elevation gain. Course map can be found here.
  • The Clock: A new loop starts every hour. If you’re not in the starting corral when the bell rings, your race is over.
  • Live Online Tracking: Want to share your progress with friends and family in real-time? We got you covered!
  • The Goal: Outlast everyone else. There is no finish line — only the last runner standing after 30 hours. Hey the RDs need sleep, too! In the event that multiple runners finish all 30 hours, the runner who crosses the line first on the final lap is the winner. Unique to our event, we will keep the event going for the final runner if they want to continue to 100 miles/30 hours.
  • Milestone Awards: Even though there is only one winner, we will recognize participants who complete milestone distances 1/2 Marathon, Marathon, 50k, 50 mile, 100k, 100 mile with a sweet patch.
  • The Spirit: Equal parts competition and camaraderie. You’ll suffer, laugh, and share miles with people who understand why this matters.
  • Runners Area: Each runner will have their own personal 12′ x 12′ area near the starting line.
  • The Calories: As this is a 30-hr event and each person has their own individual nutritional needs, we encourage you to bring what you know works for you. We will have a Runner-only Aid Station Table and provide simple items like water, electrolyte drink, fruit, candy, chips, pickles, coffee, etc. Additionally, to keep the intimate nature of this event, we invite you to bring food for a Communal Aid Station Table that will be open to all – runners, crew, etc. Do you make killer brownies? Are your chocolate chip cookies better than Mama Kapfer’s? Do you live on a fruit farm and have an abundance? Are you a gnocchi fan? Bring it all! Additionally, we will provide pizza at some point in the evening for those who are still making laps. We will have some cups, but please bring your own to cut down on waste.
  • The Rules:
    1. -Runners must be standing in the starting corral when the next loop starts, at the top of each hour, or else they will not be able to continue.
    2. -Runners will also not continue if they choose not to themselves.
    3. -We will blow a whistle 3 times at 3 min before the start of a lap, 2 times at 2 min before the start of a lap, and 1 time at 1 min before the start of a lap.
    4. -A bell is rung to signal the start of each loop, on the hour.
    5. -There will be no late starts once the bell is rung.
    6. -Once the bell is rung, runners may not visit their crew, their tent, their vehicle or receive aid from anyone.
    7. -Loops will continue until only one runner finishes a loop, and at that point, that runner is the winner. Note: the final runner can keep going to 30 hours if they choose.
    8. -All other runners are officially a DNF. However, we will capture total distance covered for each participant as a part of the results, and you will receive a patch for reaching certain distances.
    9. -To declare a winner, there MUST be only one person to finish a loop in the hour given. For example: If two runners are left and they both finish a loop in the time given and then one runner drops, the other runner still must complete another loop in the time given. If that last runner does not finish the last loop in the hour given, that runner will be a “DNF” and there will be no finishers.
    10. -If more than one runner finishes 30 laps, the person with the fastest last lap will be declared the winner.
    11. -Runners must stay on the course once the starting bell is rung.
    12. -The only reason for leaving the course once the bell is rung is to use the porta-potty.
    13. -Once you finish your loop you may choose to do what you want, but must be back in the starting corral before the bell rings to start the next loop.
    14. – Runners may start to setup their area at the time provided by the Race Director in the information email. Early setup is not permitted.
    15. -Any runner that DNFs must immediately vacate their spot close to the finish line to allow surviving runners to move closer. Tents can remain up for the duration of the event and DNF runners are welcome to continue hanging out, spectating, cheering, and crewing as we wait until one runner remains.
    16. -Poles are permitted.
    17. -Race Directors have the right to pause the race due to inclement weather.
    18. -Runners are required to carry/wear headlamp with either extra batteries or backup light between sunset and sunrise, starting at the 8 p.m. hour and running through the 5 a.m. hour.
    19. -Race Directors have the right to remove a runner from the race if they feel it is unsafe for the runner to continue.
    20. -No littering.
    21. -No alcohol allowed on the premises
    22. -No dogs allowed on the course (but they are allowed at the event to hang with your crew).
